Berlin porcelain cup and saucer, c.1775. The cup bearing the gilt monogram FR, of Frederick the Great, entwined with leaves. Having a double twist branch handle, heightened in gilt, the terminals with painted leafy branches spreading to the body of the cup. The rim with a gilt dentil motif. Painted to the interior with a sprig of leaves.
The saucer, painted with a trophy of a staff surmounted by a bird, and a trumpet, tied by a ribbon inscribed ‘Vive le Rio’. All within a laurel wreath, supported by a gilt band.
Having a gilt dentil rim.
Sceptre marks in underglaze blue to both pieces, along with purple enamel painters marks 13 and Z.
Height of cup – 4.5 cm, 1 3/4”.
Diameter of saucer – 13.2 cm, 5 1/8”.
Condition – Some typical wear to the gilt dentil rims. No damage. No restoration.
