Japanese Shibayama netsuke of an elephant. Signed Masaharu 正春. Meiji Period.


Japanese ivory netsuke, by Masaharu 正春, c. 1890, Meiji Period. Well carved as a caparisoned elephant, it’s cloth carved to the top with a Phoenix, and the sides with flowering plants. The whole inlaid in Shibayama style, with variously coloured hard stones.
The himotoshi, inlaid with a mother of Pearl chrysanthemum.
Signed - Masaharu 正春 to the base.
Height - 4 cm, 1 5/8”.
Width - 5.2 cm, 2 1/8”.
Depth - 2.5 cm, 1”.
Condition - Some typical age cracks. No repairs.
