A good Staffordshire Pearlware pottery toby jug, c. 1820. Known as the George Whitfield or Nightwatchman toby jug, depicting a seated man, holding a large lantern, with his head turned left. Seated upon a Queen Anne style chair, the back of the chair, forms the spout of the jug. All set upon a puce lined base, bowed to the front, and with canted corners to the reverse.
Impressed ‘6’ to the base.
Height – 24 cm.
Condition – Some typical minor wear to the enamels. Otherwise in perfect condition. No restoration.
This is an excellent, early and original example of this jug, of which there were many inferior version made through the 19th Century.
