Satsuma pottery deep sided bowl. Meiji Period.

A Japanese, Satsuma earthenware deep sided bowl, c. 1890. Meiji Period. Enamelled to the exterior with a continuous band of flower heads, above a band of numerous birds, flying above stylised waves. The footrim surrounded by a band of lappets , with ornate gilt decoration.
Decorated internally, with a panel of figures on a river bank; the sides with butterflies flying above irises.

Gilt signature to the base.

Height – 8 cm, 3 1/4″. Diameter – 12 cm, 4 3/4″.

Condition – Typical wear to the gilded rim, and signature. Otherwise perfect. No restoration.
